10 June 2026| Basic Workshop on Making Fish and Crab Dumplings

KUALA NERUS, 10 Jun 2026 – The Faculty of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences (FSPA) has held a Basic Workshop on Making Fish and Crab Traps on 17 May – 19 May 2026 at the Aquaculture Workshop, FSPA.

The implementation of this workshop aims to provide exposure to FSPA staff regarding basic skills in making fish and crab traps practically and systematically.

This workshop was implemented in collaboration with the Malaysian Fisheries Academy (APM) Chendering, Malaysian Fisheries Department which involved 3 experienced instructors from APM, namely Mr. Zahari bin Said, Mr. Ariffin bin Salim and Mr. Ahmad Shahril Safwan Bin Abdulla.

They are certified instructors and experienced in the field of fisheries technology, especially in the aspect of building fishing gear.

In addition, this workshop can also help improve the competence and skills of staff to support existing teaching and learning (T&L) activities, the development of the Bachelor of Fisheries Technology Program (new) and the Tropical Fisheries Summer School program (Mobility Program).

Indirectly, it will be able to assist staff in planning, building and evaluating fish and crab trap designs more effectively, innovatively and in line with current academic and industry standard requirements.

The implementation of this workshop is also expected to support the development of UMT’s human capital to produce more competitive, competent staff who can contribute to the development of fisheries technology at the national and global levels.

Apart from that, this workshop also serves as a platform for strategic cooperation between UMT, especially FSPA with the Malaysian Fisheries Department in strengthening fishing equipment technology in line with current industry practices and needs
